Gaudiesque Skylight
Wrought Iron and Handmade Glass Skylight
David Wood designed this sculptural skylight for a private Melbourne residence. Its long, rounded form and flowing framework were developed to sit within the curved plasterwork above the stairwell.
David handmade the steel frame at Bent Metal, forming an irregular network of lines around a series of circular openings. He commissioned glass artist and glassblower Billy Crellin of Studio Dokola to make the individual hand-blown glass rondels, drawing on Billy’s specialist knowledge of glassmaking.
David selected the colours of the glass to reflect the changing colours of the sky. Each rondel has its own colour, texture and pattern, and David meticulously fitted the individual pieces into the handmade metal framework.
Installed above the staircase, the skylight changes throughout the day. The glass responds to the sky and sunlight, casting shifting blue, green, violet and pale rose reflections across the curved walls.
