Isaiah 53:6

We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way…..

With direct reference to the famous impressionist painting by Tom Roberts, this sculptural installation pays homage to the mythology of the Australian bush and character.

Modern times, and in particular the current global pandemic have brought to rise the notion of society being little more than sheep herded.

A dozen tables, representing the bourgeoisie, the decimated hospitality industry, and life at home, have broken away from the flock, bolting down the hill in the top paddock, their crisp white table cloths barely managing to stay in place.

Do they run in fear or escape to freedom and can they be mustered to safety?

Insight: Peter Schipperheyn, judge of the Gippsland Sculpture Awards, outdoor and indoor sculpture exhibition from 26 March to 7 May

“Driving into Yinnar, I was struck by the surreal quality of the running tables and flowing white tablecloths darting and scurrying into the town centre. I loved the movement and dashing personality of the pieces."

Insight: Neil Williams, Creative Director, Montalto Sculpture Prize 2022

“David Wood’s ’The Break Away’ I found to be the perfect light hearted response to the situation we all found ourselves in through the pandemic. ' Herded like sheep down a particular path, I think we all at times wanted to break away and escape. A lovely resolved work that clearly resonated with its audience at Montalto. Congratulations David.”
