Location: 320 Burke Road, Glen Iris, Melbourne

Materials: Bronze

For Howard Dawson Reserve, David Wood created a series of small bronze sculptures for a playground shaped around castles, creek lines and children’s imagination.

The bronzes draw on old stories, armour, animals and symbols. The group includes a castle tower, armoured riders, a dragon, a frog prince, a shield and a sword.

The works began in drawings and were developed into modelled forms for bronze casting. Each piece carries the hand of the maker in its surface, with texture, line and small details left visible.

The bronzes sit within the playground as small discoveries. They bring together drawing, modelling and metalwork at an intimate scale, while still belonging to David’s larger practice in public sculpture.
